EMDR

What is EMDR?

EMDR is one of the most intensively researched methods of trauma therapy in the world, one whose efficacy has been proved time and time again. It was developed in California by Dr Francine Shapiro. Originally intended for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), EMDR is today successfully used in many other areas.

EMDR is a scientifically proven approach that helps individuals process (de-sensitise) traumatic memories and reduce the emotional distress associated with them. EMDR uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation while the individual recalls distressing memories, which can assist with both the processing and desensitisation of these memories; thus reducing their emotional charge.

What is EMDR used for?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Processing has many applications including:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – EMDR is widely recognised for its effectiveness in treating PTSD, helping individuals process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact.
  • Anxiety Disorders – It can be used to address various anxiety related issues, including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorders.
  • Depression – EMDR can target underlying traumas which may contribute to depressive symptoms.
  • Phobias – EMDR can assist clients to desensitise specific phobias.
  • Grief and Loss – EMDR can help clients to process grief and loss.
  • Chronic Pain and Illness
  • Performance Anxiety – Athletes performers and corporate leaders can use EMDR to overcome performance related anxiety and improve focus.
  • Childhood Trauma – EMDR can be effective in processing childhood trauma.
